What is an Eruv?

An Eruv is a Halachic boundary that allows Jews to carry in public areas on Shabbat.

Why is an Eruv necessary?

Shabbat is a day that is set apart from the rest of the week according to Halacha. On this day, certain activities associated with work are prohibited. According to Halacha, carrying and pushing wheelchairs or prams outside of a valid Eruv on Shabbat is prohibited.

It follows that most Shabbat-observant people depend upon a valid Eruv in order to operate according to Halacha on Shabbat.
