Mikva for Women

Jewish married women are obligated to purify themselves in a Mikva at certain times of the month. Women who get married with the Beth Din’s authorization are required to attend classes before the wedding to ensure that they are well-versed in the Halachot pertaining to Mikva.

Mikva for Men

Jewish men are not obligated to immerse in a Mikva at a specific time. Some Jewish men have the custom to immerse in a Mikva prior to Yom Kippur, or prior to other Chagim, but this is not an obligation.

Keli Mikva (Mikva for Vessels)

If manufactured or owned by a non-Jew, certain new items — specifically those that will come into contact with food — must be Tovelled (dipped) in a Mikva before use. All labels and stickers must be removed from the vessel before Tevilah (the dipping process), and a Bracha (blessing) is said immediately prior to Tevilah is done. Tevilah of vessels can be performed by a Jewish man or woman.

Materials that necessitate Tevilah

Depending on the material of the vessel, some vessels do not require Tevilah e.g. vessels made from wood or stone
  • Metal (Tovel with a Bracha)
  • Glass (Tovel with a Bracha)
  • Glazed China or Ceramics (Tovel without a Bracha)
  • Combination of materials

There are differing opinions regarding Tevilah of plastic vessels.
